For two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025, Tad Moore Golf (www.tadmoore.com) in the US was our kind sponsor in support of the China Hickory Open Championships. The first two CHOCs were held at the Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen and the Mission Hills Haikou Golf Club in Hainan Island. After receiving my reports about the Inaugural event, Tad told me: “You had a great first Hickory Open. A great field!”

Once again, Tad Moore Golf will be the sponsor for the 3rd China Hickory Open, which will be held on November 16-18, 2026 at the Jockey Club KSC Public Golf Course in Hong Kong. The Hidden Grace Golf Museum, China’s first non-profit golf museum, has become a distributor of Tad Moore hickory golf clubs.
Since 1963, Tad Moore has been designing custom golf clubs for the most discriminating amateur and professional golfers around the world. Tad’s golf club designs are distinguished by their classic and timeless shape.
An avid golfer all his life, Tad has won several amateur tournaments and uses his knowledge of the game to help create his designs. In 1989 he became a full-time golf club designer when he signed an agreement with Dunlop/Maxfli/Slazenger Corporation. The Maxfli 100% milled putters were a first for the golf industry. At one time Tad had over 72 of the finest players using his milled and cast putters on Tour. In 1991 one of Tad’s putters won the coveted Masters Tournament. In 1992 Tad introduced the first new USA Forged Wedges into the market in the USA and Europe.

In 1997 Tad started Tad Moore Golf Inc. in Selma, Alabama. Over the years Tad was granted one of his latest patents for a new milled putter hosel design. In 2001 Tad accepted a design contract to develop a full Pro line of clubs for the Dunlop company. His first year produced a driver that Sean Fister used to win the Remax World Long Drive Championship.
In 2005, Moore reintroduced hickory clubs with designs inspired by the 1920s classics from MacGregor and William Gibson. “My friend said to me one night at St. Andrews, you make all those clubs for tour players, so you can certainly make a wood shaft club,” Moore was quoted as saying by WSFA 12 in 2022. He must have been inspired by the St. Andrews Golf Co.

Tad said that making hickory shaft clubs is different from making modern golf clubs. “We get our hickory up in Tennessee so the stuff weighs more than a modern shaft of steel or graphite. The clubs are a little heavier but they have a great response and feel. I can build a modern golf club like wood or a putter in 10 minutes. This takes three days,” he said. “We start with a perfectly round dowel 7/8 inches in diameter. When it comes out it has a taper. So, this is how you get the flex. Then you put it into an old pencil sharpener and we turn this so it fits into the head.”

After that the hickory shafts are stained and all the finishing details are done by hand. These clubs blend traditional aesthetics with modern functionality, appealing to players who value golf's heritage and distinctiveness. Today Tad Moore hickory clubs are distributed all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, UK, Canada and China.
